Our Identity Is

Our Foundation.

Preserving Heritage. Empowering the Future.

For the Hyolmo people, culture is not a relic to be preserved behind glass — it is a living inheritance,
carried forward in the words we speak, the stories we tell, the rituals we practice and the festivals that
bring our communities together.

CULTURE & IDENTITY

Progress and identity

can grow together.

As the world around us changes rapidly, we hold firmly to the belief that empowerment and
modern development must never come at the cost of who we are.

Progress and identity are not opposites; they can, and must, grow together.

OUR BELIEF

A community rooted firmly
in its identity is best
equipped to engage
confidently with the future.

Heritage gives communities the confidence to grow without leaving themselves behind.

OUR CULTURAL WORK

Keeping a living heritage in motion.

01

Preserving the Hyolmo Language

We support initiatives that document, teach, and revitalize the Hyolmo language — from community classes and children's learning materials to audio archives that capture the voices of our elders.

Every word saved is a thread that keeps the fabric of our community whole.

02

Safeguarding Traditional Knowledge

We support efforts to record and transmit practical knowledge of medicinal plants, sustainable farming, animal husbandry, weather patterns, and mountain survival.

This wisdom remains accessible to younger generations and recognized as a valuable contribution to sustainability and Indigenous knowledge systems.

03

Honoring Oral History

We support the collection and preservation of narratives through interviews, recordings, and community storytelling events.

These histories carry memories of migration, resilience, and community life that shaped who we are today

04

Sustaining Spiritual Practice

We support the continuation of traditional spiritual practices and the spaces — monasteries, shrines, and community gatherings — where these practices are kept alive.

Faith and ritual remain sources of grounding and continuity as communities adapt to new circumstances.

05

Celebrating Cultural Festivals

We support the organization and continuation of Hyolmo cultural festivals in home communities and among the diaspora.

Language, ritual, food, dress, music, and dance come together to strengthen belonging across generations and geographies.

LANGUAGE • KNOWLEDGE • MEMORY

What we inherit, we can carry

forward.

Language carries worldview, humor, wisdom, and relationships to land and community across generations. Traditional knowledge connects generations to the Himalayan environment. Oral histories preserve memories that written records alone cannot replace

IDENTITY AS A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE

Grow and evolve -

on our own terms.

Modern development — education, economic opportunity, healthcare, infrastructure — should strengthen our communities, not erase what makes them distinct.

By actively supporting the preservation of our language, knowledge, history, spirituality, and festivals, we ensure that as Hyolmo communities grow and evolve, they do so on their own terms, carrying their heritage forward rather than leaving it behind.
